And great f...This is a pretty devastating critique. And great fun to read. I almost feel sorry for the opposing side. But then I remember that they started it.<br /><br />So Hays's main point is that unanswered prayer is justified, because if prayers were consistently answered, then belief in God would be a matter of objective, scientific knowledge. Then there would be no room for faith. Faith being something like the volitional acceptance of a belief. It's a matter of free will, and it's a moral issue as it's a Christian virtue. For it to be a meaningful moral test, we need the option to adopt or abandon faith to be open to us.<br /><br />Now maybe I'm taking things to a 'logical extreme' here, but this sounds hard to reconcile with Calvinism.<br /><br />I'm reminded of something I saw on Twitter, shared by the Quakers:<br /><br />https://twitter.com/alastairmci/status/761087853749084160<br /><br />This same volitional faith justification is also a solution to the problem of evil. Seems to work better with a non-literalist interpretation of the religion. I don't know much about Quaker theology.
